It made me wonder if it's a good idea or not. I mean I'm trying to deschool myself and stop being a control-freak parent. And I'm trying to let the kids self-regulate how much TV and computer they use. So isn't it wrong that I set TV-free days etc..

When I was a teenager, my parents paid me to not watch tv for a month. They paid me 50 dollars. I was only in it for the money.. at first. After the withdrawal symptoms went away (about 2 weeks) i could have cared less about what was on. That one month of going tv free totally changed my tv viewing habits. after not watching for a month i found the tv noisy and boring. i still (17 years later) don't like watching it. i think going without television is great it is def easier when you are young to break the habit. maybe a little incentive for the older one might help.
tv free does kind of contradict your "unschooling" philosophy but I agree it's good...otherwise you get addicted and dependent. I don't watch TV anymore and I really don't miss it...internet though is another story...LOL
mind you if I had beautiful fresh air, an organic garden, farm, tree platform, animals etc...I think you'd hardly find me indoors! :)
The funny thing is that it's my oldest child, who is so resistant to the idea of no TV who has lived the longest without TV in his life. For the first three years I didn't own a TV and then we had one for about 6months before we moved into our bus for another 3 years. It's amazing how fast they get used to it.
I never watch it myself and that's probably why it bithers me so much. But you're right, if I'm going to have a TV, I should let them do with it as they will...
