The power of tools.

When we first moved in here we didn't own many power tools so were doing most of our building the old fashioned way with hand tools. (not to mention that I was a bit scared of using power tools)

So as we have been able to afford to buy tools I've been learning to use them.

It is just sooooooooo much quicker cutting something, drilling, stripping back second-hand wood to a useable form. And I found suprisingly fun!

So last week I was up on the roof helping dp install insulation and re-place the rusty old tin with shiney new tin. When I was growing up I never would've imagined I'd be doing this!
And the roof looks great too and hopefully it won't leak anymore!

I'm back...

At last I'm back in cyber land, I got stuck in reality for a while there. But a nice person has lent me a computer until I can buy a new one.

We've been so busy here. With visitors, birthdays and building and stuff!

I started crocheting a new blanket for the bed...I know it's not winter yet but I thought I'd get a head start with it.

The first bit...

We saw this beautiful green python in the tree this afternoon. Just as I went to take the photo a butcher bird landed in the tree next to it. What a lucky photo.

And busy, busy building. We started a deck and verandah out the front side of the house.

a close-up of my expert nailing techniques...;)

everyone helpped, even Tui helped weilded a hammer

everyone digging foundations

and a little deck warming/ birthday party. It's not totally finished yet but hopefully soon.

Oh it's great to be back!!!!!!!

Picking the beads...

The jobes Tears I planted are finally ready! Today Mr T and I picked them off the bush. There weren't as many as I thought because the chickens had been out and had a little peck at them...or rather a big peck...we only got a handful. We planeted a couple so next year we will get more and tomorrow we are going to make a braclette out of the remaining ones.

Mungbean (that's the man formally known as Peace- his new name that he came up with all by himself...what was he thinking!?!?!?!?) started replacing the front door this week.

It has been rather a long project, with new year falling in the middle and then a couple of days of rain, but now it is almost done.

Here's a photo of the tarp covering the hole that was a door!

I'll post some photos when it's done...hopefully tomorrow as MB goes back to work next week!

Tui recieved sooo many pretty little dresses for xmas, so I'd better start showing some of them off!!!

And one of Rain, because she is staying at her cousins house and I miss her!

And Zan got back from his Dad's house yesterday. He had a great time over xmas and the new year so here's a photo of him levitating above the new trampoline!!!

Happy days and pixie dust to you all.

Progress

I was looking at some old photos yesterday and came across one of the house here when we first moved in.

I was pretty blown away by how much it has changed. We see the place everyday and so don't notice the changes. And they do happen slowly because we are on a budget and using lots of recycled materials.

Peace has done an amazing job in my eyes considering he hadn't really done any building before. The old sawmill office is beginning to look like a home.

Thrift Shop Jeans...or is that genes...

My kids seem to love bargain hunting as much as I do. I took Rain into the local op. shop today so she could find a dress with some nice material that she could recycle into a skirt. I think she's got the sewing bug. When all the women working there said hello to me and all the kids by name I thought I guess I do come here often. And the children were walking around spotting things that were 'ours'. I had a big clean up and donated a whole load of stuff last week and now it's all on the shelves. I had to keep Mr T away from the toys in case he saw anything I had donated!

On the weekend Zan kept asking if we could go to the dump shop. It's funny in a way for a 14 year old's favourite shop to be the dump! I asked him what he wanted to buy and he said he was just going to browse, but maybe get an exercise bike or a treadmill for the moving parts. It amazes me the things he can make out of old junk. Last year he made a really cool billy cart. Peace finally decided that he had a few things lying around that he had no use for so got Zan to help load up the trailer and off they went! Now I didn't expect them to be back for awhile because Peace has been known to come home with more than he took to get rid of!
When they arrived their bargains included a hammock which is now hanging outside Zan's room (a great place to lie and read a book), a new mallet, some hard wood that will be good for framing an awning over the door and a new bathroom sink. It all cost the princely sum of $6.
The new hammock
And last week on his way home from work Peace bought a new hot water system. Ours is about twenty-five years old and has been leaking for awhile now. So it is wasting alot of water and water is so precious around here. It probably is not very energy efficient either. The new one was sitting on the pavement outside a Pub that is being renovated. Peace made an offer and got it alot cheaper than we'd have payed anywhere else. It's only five years old so should be more efficient.
Ideally we'd like to put in a solar heating system but it's just not in the budget right now. We are going to try to rig up a home made solar back up. I have an idea how to do it that might work...have to wait and see. It might be awhile before we get it done. The 'to-do' list is getting longer and longer all the time.
Happy day to you all.

Sunday, October 19

The good, the bad and the beautiful.

It was a funny day today. Funny/wierd not funny/ha ha. We had so many jobs that we wanted to get done ( the usual Sunday thing) but so many other things happened to happen that the day turned out totally differently.
When I got up this morning I checked on the cat first thing because he's been a quiet sick for a couple of months and yesterday I got a big paralysis tick off him. He seemed a bit more lively than he did yesterday afternoon so I was feeling all good and positive about that. Mid morning Peace came in to tell me that the cat had died. It was very sad and the kids were all upset but I was impressed with how easily they can express their grief. Since we've moved to Rainbow Love Farm we've all experiensed a bit of a confrontation with the cycle of life and death. Our first year here a couple of chickens were sick and died and then a couple were swallowed by a massive carpet python. Two litters of Guinea pigs have died before we had the last four babies and now the cat. I feel grateful that the children can experience this, though, as sad as it is for me to watch them with tears falling. For so many people death isn't discussed and it is hugely confrontational when it happens and very hard to deal with. I suppose the death of pets gives me a chance to discuss spiritual ideas with the children.
Mid morning I had to go and pick up my niece who is staying the night. Because it is a long way I was meeting my SIL Miss Demeanor half way. When I got to the park I realized I had a flat tire. Well, the car is just new (second hand-new) and I couldn't find the jack but I wasn't even stressing. I have been known to stress out occasionally! I just thought that I would do what needed to be done and I wasn't in a hurry to get anywhere so it didn't really matter. SIL had a jack and we changed the tyre in lightening time. Funny thing was when I first pulled into the park this young guy got out of his car and said 'do you know you've got a flat tyre.' I said yes and he just walked off. You'd think he'd offer to help! (Maybe I was feeling a bit maiden-in-distressish.) But after we'd changed it this old guy who'd been fishing down at the river walks up and offers to help. When I said I'd finished he told me it was the first time he'd ever heard of a woman changing a tyre by herself and gave me a pat on the back. It was just wierd!
The afternoon was a bit mellower. I picked the first zuchini from the garden.

Then was entertained by the kids doing a play over at the cubby house. It was called 'Two bad pirates and the nice girl.'- very post modern. Peace tried to get some building done but kept getting attacked by a band of marauding pirates.

This afternoon I sat on the back veranda and enjoyed the view as the sun went down. It's nice to be able to walk out the door and look at the mountains. I really love the view from this side of the house. When we first moved in there was a veranda out there but we walled it in to make a bedroom for the two oldest children. Now we've got the new deck and doors leading out there it's become my favourite spot to sit.
I was contemplating something I read the other day. If you could do anything, without any retrictions what would you be doing now? Well, I decided that I would probably be doing this. Sitting enjoying the view, living in the country side, loving my four angels. There are many dreams to come true yet but lots of them are already true.

It's a wild life

The moon rising over the hills from the new back deck as accessed by the new doors.

The doors are finally in the wall. After a bit of fine tuning. Using second hand materials takes alot longer than new ones. We always underestimate the time it'll take but in the end are usually pretty happy with the results. I suppose taking into account the four kids and Peace working we should double the time we think it will take to complete a given task. ( Or maybe triple!) The wall is only half painted and we've still got to put up the architrave but it's only another days work away.

When we pulled off the old wall boards inside to replace them we found this lovely snakes skelecton as Mr T calls it. Nice to know our house provides shelter for some of the local wildlife.

Talking about wildlife, the local brush Turkey population has found a new food source- the puppies doggie biscuits seem to be a favourite snack. And the puppy has a new hobby, chasing away errant Brush Turkeys!

More on the Door

The doors are sanded, the glass has been re-puttied. Peace has been busy! Soon we'll have a working set of doors out onto the deck.It looks a lot like a building site... well I suppose it is.
Planted some lilli-pillys and wattles and a couple of other native trees ou tth efront this morning. By next year we might have privacy from the road. And we can run around in the nude if we wish. We've still got so many platns waiting to be planted but we can only water so many by hand so we'll do another lot next week-end. There's a big Old Hamii Bamboo I can't wait to plant.

Just another hole in the wall.

There is a big hole in our bedroom wall. Today we got in demolition mood and took out the window where we are going to put in the french doors. The doors aren't quiite ready to go in yet but the weather's warm enough for a bit of open-air living for a couple of days. And now we've got the motivation to finish them. Peace saw the doors at the tip-shop and when he asked how much they were the guy was pretty disbelieving that someone would want them. So Peace walked away with a five dollar set of doors!

Mr T in demo mode!
The view from the hole-in-the-wall

Then off to Pickerings for a swim.

The Taj Ma Cubby

Ever since we moved here I've wanted to create a magical garden for the children. It's kind of like the fantasy garden I dreamed of having when I was a kid. I designed it aroud two big trees that were already here when we moved in. The cubby house was our second building project. (The chook house was our first.) It was good to hone our skills before attacking any renovations on the house.

The garden is kind of diamond shaped with the two trees at two opposite corners and archway, entrance at one and the cubby house at the last corner. There is also two small hidden cirlular gardens off this that have a fairy circle(with heaps of flowers) and the other has a tic tac toe board that the kids made out of an old paver and some tiles. ( I'll have to take a photo of it.)

Last week end we built a deck off the cubby house with some left over decking boards.
It's all been built from reclaimed materials, old fence pailings a neighbour was throwing away, paint from the tip-shop, timber from skips at building sites. The whole thing, extensions included has costed about $80.
Zan(13) is so capable with power tools now and our neighbour(who is a builder) was shaking his head in disbelief after watching 8yr old rain bang a naik in with three strokes. Now that's what I call fun learning. And MrT helped. Where there's tools that's where you'll find MrT!
Now we just have to wait for the trees to grow and make it a secret cubby. Most of the gardens are native plants but I also want as much edible stuff as I can squeeze in. There are two mulberry tree, a manderine and an orange. There were about thirty ripe strawberries this morning and the kids went and sat on the new deck and had berries for breckie.
